Marie P. is a writer and journalist based in Scarborough, Ontario. Before journalism, she spent nearly a decade working in kitchens, from restaurants to institutional food service. That background still shapes the way she reports: with an attention to labour, place, class, and the systems people learn to navigate every day.

She comes to this work as the daughter of Filipino immigrants, a former line cook, and someone who grew up moving between different parts of Toronto without always feeling entirely at home in any of them. Those experiences influence the questions she asks and the stories she notices.They often point her toward the people, places and systems she wants to understand more deeply through reporting.

Marie writes reported features, essays, and creative nonfiction. Her work moves between field reporting and personal narrative, particularly when lived experience can illuminate something larger about a neighbourhood, an institution, or the way a city works.

Her work has appeared in the Toronto Star, CBC First Person and Canada’s National Observer. She has reported on subjects including immigrant-run businesses, informal bottle collection, cycling and public space, food culture, and the people whose work often goes unnoticed.

She believes journalism starts by paying attention, especially to the people, places and everyday systems that are easy to pass by.
